I’d never heard of this program before, but it works for me! Basically, high-achieving kids at the high school are offered a guaranteed admission to a UC school just based on grade-point average.
This is an excerpt from the letter Bella received this weekend:
“Dear Bella,
As one of the highest-achieving seniors at your high school, you have satisfied the University of California’s admission requirements through Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC). I am pleased to guarantee your admission to UC Davis for fall 2011 in the major of your choice. Congratulations!
All you need to do to join the UC Davis class of 2015 is to apply by the November 30 deadline, complete required “a-g” coursework and exams, and maintain your academic performance.”
I am one proud mama!

Yay, Bella!!

Extraordinary! Does Bella have a sense of what she wants to study? Davis really is a cool town. I bet she would like it there.

Davis has a public health program that Bella’s interested in – Sue’s an epidemiologist and Bella can see that Sue appears very satisfied and challenged by her job. As much as Bella loves CLOTHES, she’s thinking about studying something in math or sciences, because she does so well there. Maybe even engineering – like environmental engineering. But everything changes day-to-day for an almost 17-year old! So glad to see that you are back up and posting. Christian and Flann should be in a rock band together!! (and NOT the Rock Bottom Remainders…)

Fantastic; Bella is a true polymath.
Does either UC Davis or UCSB offer help with tuition in addition to early guaranteed admission?

*grimace* no tuition help offers yet, but hopefully that will come also. UC tuition right now is $5000 per quarter – with three quarters making a regular school year. (Fourth quarter is basically summer school.) So, I’m trying to practice feeling wealthy – because I know next year and for however many years hence, I will feel much broker than I feel now…

Way to go Bella! That’s really amazing! How come your mom, aunt or uncle never got cool offers like that?!
